Planting Places - cultivating urban greenspace
Planting Places awards 2011 - winners announced! Visit the 'Planting Places Awards' to find out more about our winners.
Planting Places supports greenspace champions with a particular focus on community-led activity. The Planting Places initiative also works at a ‘strategic’ level to promote the benefits of greenspace (and ‘green infrastructure’) as part of more sustainable ways of living and working. In short Planting Places is helping to plant the seeds of truly sustainable communities in the South West.Greenspace is a fundamental part of our cities, towns and villages, supporting healthy lifestyles and providing valuable habitats for wildlife. Greenspace has huge potential to support solutions to big current sustainability issues like climate change (eg through lower carbon access, local food production, flooding reduction measures) and obesity (eg by increasing opportunities for recreation and play) and is key to the overall sustainability challenge of moving to a ‘one planet’ 21st century lifestyle. With growth plans set to create lots of new neighbourhoods in the South West, alongside plans to regenerate many of our existing communities, the topic of greenspace has never been hotter.
Sustainability South West SSW works in partnership with a range of organisations, including Natural England, to help Planting Places to:
Work with a cross sectoral range of partners to champion and enhance the role of greenspace in the South West and promote our vision and principles for sustainable greenspace
Support the regional networking of urban greenspace champs to strengthen their voice in regional developments and maximise results
Share stories of the people that care for and champion the South West’s urban greenspace
