Fair Shares, Fair Choice

Fair Shares, Fair Choice is a campaign from Charity Sustainability South West for individuals, organisations, businesses Fair Shares, Fair Choice and community groups who support the principle of:

‘A globally fair and safe carbon share for everyone’

If everyone lives within a fair carbon share we can avoid the worst effects of climate change!

Joining the Fair Shares, Fair Choice campaign offers you:

The Fair Shares, Fair Choice annual carbon budget doesn’t short change the less well-off, or climate Fair Shares Fair Choice carbon cardsafety (the formula aims to keep global temperature rise to within a 2 degree increase). It is based on the principles of an internationally recognised model - the UN backed ‘Contraction and Convergence.’ It calculates per capita carbon budgets which take account of the different needs of developed and developing nations. Fair Shares, Fair Choice has calculated a 'fair share'  for every person who lives in the UK. 2010's fair carbon share for individuals is 3.8 tonnes - at an average of 4.8 tonnes (excluding carbon hefty international flights and cruises!) many of us are already in the red. To be on target to meet 2017's personal and regional budgets we need to reduce our collective carbon spending by around a third. Everyone - whether it's local teams or local authorities - is invited to join the Fair Shares, Fair Choice campaign to support the principle of living within a globally fair and safe share of CO2 emissions (signing up takes one minute!).

If you support the principle of 'a globally fair and safe carbon share for everyone', Sign Up to Fair Shares, Fair Choice today and join businesses, schools, celebrities, MP's, councillors, community groups, organisations and individuals all supporting a fair, safe system to tackle climate change.

Fair Shares, Fair Choice will record the total number of pledges of support, which will be used to demonstrate the level of demand for fair and safe carbon shares. Sustainability South West will feed back on the campaign’s progress to decision makers and the media.

In addition to Signing Up to the principle of fair, safe carbon shares, users of the Fair Shares, Fair Choice website can get advice on making positive low carbon choices at home and work, and are invited to share their 'carb-cutting' stBaby with FSFC personal carbon cardories and tips. A team of free, virtual carbon coaches will help people explore how to make their carbon budget go further, calculate their carbon footprint, provide information about personal carb-busting challenges to try and offer resources for your business, public agency, organisation, community group or school to take positive action. You can also request your FREE 2010 Carbon Card showing your personal fair and safe share of carbon for the year and every year until 2017!

Fair Shares, Fair Choice initially launched as a regional campaign on 22nd March 2007 as the South West's sustainability 'Big Idea'. Defra asked all UK regions to come up with a Big Idea for sustainability and SSW (as the region's sustainable development Champion Body) co-ordinated the campaign. On 15th March 2009 Fair Shares, Fair Choice became a national campaign with a new website and ongoing promotional activities, starting with a cinema screening of Fair Shares, Fair Choice promotional film, which can be viewed on the website.
