Sustainable Health website launched

19/11/2009 14:58

Sustainability South West has launched a new website to support sustainability within the NHS. The website, www.sustainablehealthsw.org.uk, is available to all NHS staff in the South West and beyond.

Supported by NHS South West, www.sustainablehealthsw.org.uk is a key part of the Sustainable Health SW project, supporting the region's NHS organisations in working towards sustainability. The website has sections that mirror the key areas and actions from Carbon Reduction Strategy for the NHS and contains a range of resources and information, news and events. A forum allows NHS staff to share best practice and feed in to the work of the Sustainable Health SW project. The site also links the NHS to wider sustainability issues, including natural spaces and climate change, to help embed sustainability in all aspects of NHS organisations.

Sustainable Health SW is a partnership project of NHS South West and charity Sustainability South West (SSW), the region’s independent sustainable development champion, and is funded by the South West Strategic Health Authority as part of their work on sustainability. The project is guided by a Sustainability Network, which is open to all sustainability leads for the region’s NHS Trusts and other key partner organisations. It is hoped that Sustainable Health SW will be an exemplar project, and will provide a model for similar projects and associated Sustainability Networks across the NHS nationally.

Sustainable Health SW Project Manager, Lynn Gibbons, is pleased with the outcome of the website. ‘The NHS has an extremely important role to play in supporting sustainability, both within their organisations and in local communities. I hope this website will prove to be a useful resource for all NHS staff to help them to not only meet carbon reduction targets, but to make sustainability a key part of all their work after all sustainability and well-being go hand in hand.’

The NHS in the South West is often held up as an example of a region where sustainable development and focus on climate change is high. The excellent work done by many of the NHS trusts across the region has been used in national publications demonstrating best practice, and the enthusiasm for the NHS to take a leading role around climate change was evident from the 92% response rate of NHS trusts in the South West to the NHS Carbon Reduction Strategy.
