Surprise! We're the 'Sust Squad' - do you shape up?

11/01/2007 08:47

A (masked purple) hit squad will be dropping in on a top company or council near you in the next few weeks to see how well they shape up to big challenges like climate change.  Armed with a brand new, never seen in public before, purple DIY sustainability tool, the Sust' Squad will be measuring organisations on how sustainable they really are.

The idea of the DIY tool, which looks just like a purple ruler to the untrained observer, is designed to help everyone achieve a greener future. Just like all masked super heroes the Sust' Squad wouldn't normally reveal their identities, but the staff at Sustainability South West don't mind admitting they're willing to don silly costumes if it’ll help them get the message across. The charity, which champions sustainable development in the South West, has developed the ‘Sustainability Shaper’ - an all singing, all dancing website (www.shapersw.net) - to help organisations get going on their new year sustainability shape up. And with a little help from the Sust' Squad the South West could become the greenest region in the land.

Sustainability South West’s Director, Leslie Watson, explains, “The New Year is a time to think about the future and to shape new challenges into opportunities. Think of some of the challenges we are facing. Higher fuel prices, insecure energy supplies; climate change; lack of affordable housing; increasing competition for our businesses; growing levels of obesity and keeping our environment special when we are the fastest growing region in the UK. Those who shape up on sustainability will get ahead by making smart choices. They’ll learn how to reduce carbon emissions and generate local, clean energy; build houses and businesses that are super energy efficient, eat more locally produced food, drive less, walk and cycle more and develop within environmental limits.”

One thousand of the promotional Shaper rulers will be distributed by Sustainability South West this week to key organisations and influential movers and shakers.

The Shaper website is supported by agencies including The Regional Development Agency, Regional Assembly and Government Office, and other partners who have contributed to the working group (see Notes to Editors for details).

Further press releases will be released with details of the Sust’ Squad tour!
