South West C+ Carbon Positive Awards Finalists Announced
04/04/2008 17:30Finalists have been selected for the South West’s first C+ Carbon Positive Awards, a region-wide
award scheme that recognises the businesses, organisations and communities that are taking a proactive and innovative low carbon approach to the way in which we live and work. Over 70 entries were received from businesses, organisations and community groups of all sizes and many different sectors from right across the region.
This awards programme has been developed by the South West of England Regional Development Agency and is supported by Business in the Community and Sustainability South West. The five award categories and finalists are listed below:
Carbon Positive Footprints: for businesses and organisations successfully cutting their carbon emissions. Finalists: Alistair Sawday, Commercial Ltd, Leap Media, Ecclesiastical Insurance PLC, EDF Energy, Wessex Water
Carbon Positive Consumer Choices: for businesses and organisations offering consumers more low carbon choices. Finalists: Nutshell Natural Paints, Rosemullion Homes, Who Cares Ltd
Carbon Positive Cutting Edge: for businesses and organisations developing innovative carbon cutting solutions. Finalists: Good Energy, Kensa Engineering, Plug into the Sun, Dyson
Carbon Positive Communities: for communities that are successfully reducing their carbon footprint. Finalists: Bovey Climate Action Group, Knowle West Media Centre, Devon County Council, United Bristol Healthcare NHS Trust, Urchfont Parish Council
Carbon Positive Micro: exemplary low carbon micro businesses. Finalists: Mallinson Ltd, The Limes Bed and Breakfast
All finalists are also put forward for the overall award, Carbon Positive Pioneer 2008.
The judging panel included representatives from the South West of England RDA, BT, Viridor Waste Management, Carbon Sense, Sustainability South West and Business in the Community. All the finalists have been invited to a C+ Carbon Positive Awards awards ceremony, taking place at HRH The Prince of Wales Mayday Business Summit on Climate Change, on 1 May at Met Office, Exeter.
Dr Julian Dennis, Chair of Sustainability South West comments; “The awards ceremony forms part of The Prince's May Day Business Summit on Climate Change, a national initiative which links up twelve events across the UK all engaging businesses on climate change and highlighting the urgency with which businesses need to reduce their carbon. All of the businesses selected as finalists for the awards have not only demonstrated their role for cutting carbon in their own activities but have also shown leadership to the rest of the business community in doing so.
