Profiting from a low carbon economy

20/03/2008 11:45

The South West C+ Carbon Positive Awards launched on Monday 14 January, a region-wide award scheme that will recognise the businesses, organisations and communities that are taking a proactive and innovative low carbon approach to the ways in which we live and work.

The South West of England Regional Development Agency, Business in the Community and Sustainability South West have joined forces in developing the awards, building on the South West’s growing reputation for ambition and excellence in achieving sustainable solutions.

There are five categories in the award scheme:

1. Carbon Positive Footprints: for organisations successfully cutting their carbon emissions
2. Carbon Positive Consumer Choices: for organisations offering consumers more low carbon choices
3. Carbon Positive Cutting Edge: for organisations developing innovative carbon cutting solutions
4. Carbon Positive Communities: for communities that are successfully reducing their carbon footprint.
5. Carbon Positive Pioneer: the business, organisation or community that is having the greatest impact on carbon reduction in the South West.

Each of the first three categories will recognise both a large and small to medium sized organisation giving those with fewer than 250 employees an equal chance to win each award.   Each of the first four category winners will also be put forward for the overall award winner: Carbon Positive Pioneer 2008.

Winners of existing local and regional environment awards are also invited to enter the C+ Carbon Positive Awards; this collaborative approach will further develop the reputation of the region as one that is working together to lead the way in climate friendly living and working.

Simon Hooton, the South West Regional Development Agency’s Director of Policy and Strategy, comments; “We have to find ways for our economy, our businesses and our communities to operate successfully while dealing with climate change and the increasing price of oil. This award scheme will identify the shining examples that we can all learn from. We hope to uncover the dedicated, the passionate and the truly innovative and celebrate their achievements.”

The deadline for applications has now passed with entries received from businesses, organisations and communities all across the South West region. Shortlisted finalists will be announced on 4th April 2008 and an award ceremony and celebration will take place on 1 May 2008, Met Office, Exeter
